It's hard not to notice all the concern surrounding our local shelters, rescues, foster organizations and others working hard to manage our overpopulation of homeless pets. Some of it is very hard to hear.
We, here, at Bones-N-Scones think it may be more useful for us to focus on eliminating the barriers that keep people from being able to adopt a homeless cat or dog. Remember when shelters were just temporary holdover places for misplaced pets waiting to be re-homed? Now, they're almost institutions. That's a shame because every shelter and re-homing organization we've ever loved was all about the idea of putting themselves out of business by placing every dog & cat possible into a loving home.
Some barriers are hard barriers. They're insurance companies that won't allow certain breeds, they're landlords who won't allow pets at all. They're adoption fees that are so high people can't afford to adopt, and so the costs of boarding and care just continue rather than subsiding as needy cats and dogs are placed into homes where they'll get love and attention and won't cost our rescues, shelters and re-homing organizations a cent more. Some barriers are easier. We're taking on one of them that we know we can help to remove. That's the cost of feeding a cat or dog once you bring them home. That's what our Make Pet Parenting Affordable Again program is all about.
